As I work in the world of heath and nutrition I’m often (some would say always!) having conversations with people, including my friends and family, about health, nutrition etc.

This week I was involved in a conversation about colonic irrigation.

My 2 friends had both decided to have one for their own reasons, the conclusion they both gave after the experience is they got some great nutrition advice from the practitioner as well as the ‘clear out’ light feeling you walk away with. So they both got an unexpected value from the experience, which is great.

As we discussed this for a while one of my friends mentioned that there was some ‘recognizable food’ in the exit pipe, which she had eaten a few days before the treatment. She was concerned about the length of time her body takes to eliminate. If you feel your body takes a while a colonic can be a good exercise to clear blocked pipes and also to analyze what comes out. The key take away from her experience to me was she is not chewing her food properly.

Why does this matter? If your food is making it’s way into your intestines in an almost whole / recognizable state it has not been sufficiently broken down. This means the nutrients within that food can’t be passed through the walls of the intestine and absorbed. So even if you’re eating lots of healthy veg, if it’s passing through your system fairly undigested you will not be receiving the vital nutrients that food provides.

One of my 10 top tips for body fat reduction is to chew your food, here’s what it says;

  • Chew your food well. Digestion begins in the mouth. By thoroughly chewing your food, your body will better assimilate nutrients; you will also slow down your eating. It takes about 20 minutes for your brain to register that it is full. By slowing your eating, you’ll feel full and satisfied on less food.

I think getting nutrients from your food is the important part, however if you are trying to lose weight slowing down eating will aid this. 

Think about having a colonic, who knows what you might learn from it, both from your own stools and the expert advice from the practitioner.

A colonic is a great way to clear not only ‘blocked pipes’ but if done together with a juice cleanse and some additional supplements you can rid your body of built up toxins. Over time toxins can build up and sit in our intestines in the form of colon plaque. Google it, yep that monster lives in our bodies! When you take steps to remove this, your body feels fantastic, your nutrient intake becomes more efficient as the lining of your colon is clearer and your body can deal with the every day toxins much more effectively. In fact one positive side effect I have after doing this is no hang-overs for 6 months! Now I’m not suggesting you go through the process for this reason, but it’s a nice little bonus!
